About Panche People
The Panche were a people of the hot lowlands west of present-day Bogota, and for most of the record we have they are defined by who they were not: they were not Muisca. Before and during the Spanish invasion they held the broken country between the Magdalena River and the western slope of the Eastern Cordillera, in what is now Cundinamarca and northern Tolima. The Muisca held the cold plateau above them. The two fought along that altitude line more or less permanently, and the Panche reputation that survives is a Muisca reputation first and a Spanish one second: raiders from below, hard to govern, impossible to tax. Their own language is barely recorded, a scatter of place names and a few words preserved in colonial paperwork, usually filed with the Cariban family. That would tie them to the Muzo, Colima and Pijao of the same river country rather than to the Chibchan-speaking highlanders next door. It is a reasonable classification, not a settled one.
They farmed maize, yuca and cotton on cleared slopes, fished the Magdalena and its tributaries, worked gold into nose and ear ornaments, and lived in scattered settlements under war leaders rather than anything resembling the Muisca confederation. Spanish chroniclers accused them of eating war captives, and it is worth knowing why the charge mattered: under Spanish law the label caribe made a people legally enslaveable. The accusation was profitable to the men making it and should be read with that in mind. The end came quickly. Spanish forces out of the new settlement at Bogota pushed into Panche country in the late 1530s, a Spanish column with Muisca allies broke a Panche army at Tocarema in 1538, and within two decades encomiendas and Spanish towns, Tocaima among them, sat on their land. Disease did most of the rest. By the mid 1600s the Panche had stopped existing as a distinct people, less through extermination alone than through resettlement, baptism and marriage into the mestizo population of the middle Magdalena. Their descendants are the country people of Tocaima, Anapoima, Guaduas and the towns around them, where the name now functions mostly as local history.
