They speak Macedonian, a South Slavic language, in the local Galičnik dialect, part of the western group of Macedonian dialects. Most are Eastern Orthodox Christians, with a Muslim minority in the wider Reka area. Their spiritual anchor is the monastery of St. John Bigorski in the Radika gorge. Its carved wooden iconostasis is the work of masters from Gari and Galičnik. Mijak villages were also a center of the Debar school of icon painting and woodcarving. Its craftsmen, Dičo Zograf of Tresonče among them, decorated churches across the Balkans in the nineteenth century.
Nothing shaped Mijak life more than pečalba, the long stints of work abroad. Men went out as builders, masons and craftsmen and came home in summer. That is why Galičnik weddings were traditionally held around Petrovden, St. Peter's Day, in July. The Galičnik Wedding is still held every year as a real ceremony for a chosen couple. The bride wears a heavy embroidered costume, drums and zurlas play, and the men dance Teškoto, the heavy one, a dance that has become a national emblem. In the end, leaving home won out. Galičnik is nearly empty for most of the year, and most Mijaks now live in Skopje or abroad, coming back for the feast.
Their national identity has long been argued over. Galičnik produced both Parteniy Zografski, a leading cleric of the Bulgarian church movement, and Georgi Pulevski, one of the first writers to argue for a distinct Macedonian nation. Most Mijaks today identify as Macedonians.
