Mazices struck Cyrenaica and the oases of Egypt's Western Desert, and around 407 they sacked the monastic settlements of Scetis in the Wadi el Natrun. Whether these were one people is doubtful. It is safer to read Mazices as a label outsiders applied to independent Berber-speaking tribes along and beyond the Roman frontier: farmers and herders in the mountains of the west, camel nomads in the Libyan desert. They spoke early forms of the Berber languages, a branch of the Afroasiatic family distantly related to ancient Egyptian and the Semitic languages. Their religion is poorly documented. Local gods and tomb cults are attested for ancient Berbers generally, and those living inside the provinces met Christianity by the fourth century. Herodotus says his Maxyes shaved the left side of the head, grew the hair long on the right, painted their bodies with red ochre and claimed descent from Trojan refugees.
The Mazices never disappeared. The Latin name fell out of use as Roman and Byzantine Africa gave way to the Arab conquests of the seventh century, but the people carried on under other labels, and the word itself outlasted every empire that wrote it down. Many millions of North Africans now call themselves Imazighen, and the modern Amazigh movement chose that ancient self-name deliberately over Berber, a label that began in other people's mouths.
