About Masmuda People
The Masmuda were a medieval Berber confederation of what is now Morocco, at their height from roughly the eighth to the thirteenth century in the High Atlas, the Anti-Atlas, the Sous valley and the Atlantic plains, and their descendants are today's Shilha, the Tashelhit-speaking Amazigh of the south. What set them apart from the other two great Berber blocs, the Sanhaja and the Zenata, was that they stayed put. While the Sanhaja ranged the Sahara with camels and the Zenata rode the eastern plains, the Masmuda terraced mountain valleys, irrigated the Sous, built fortified granaries and lived in stone villages that a farmer from the Atlas would still recognize. Medieval Arab genealogists filed them under the Baranis, usually glossed as the settled Berbers, and that agricultural, mountain character shaped how they made war and how they took to religion. Their language was the ancestor of Tashelhit, a Berber tongue of the Afroasiatic family, and already distinct from the Zenati speech of the east.
Islam arrived in the eighth century and the Masmuda took it in unusual directions. On the Atlantic coast the Barghawata branch built a state whose founder, Salih ibn Tarif, claimed prophethood and issued scripture in Berber; that community held out for three centuries before the Almoravids and then the Almohads erased it. The Almohads were the Masmuda's great achievement. Ibn Tumart, a scholar from the Hargha tribe of the Anti-Atlas, came home from the east around 1120, settled at Tinmel in the High Atlas, declared himself the Mahdi and preached a stark unitarian creed in Berber to mountain tribes who eventually came down and took Marrakesh in 1147. The Hafsids, who ruled Tunis until 1574, traced their line to a Hintata companion of Ibn Tumart, and the Hintata themselves held Marrakesh as local emirs into the sixteenth century. The Regraga, a small Masmuda tribe near Essaouira, still claim descent from seven early converts and walk an annual spring circuit of their shrines. In later centuries the people of the western Atlas were simply called Shilha, and the Masmuda name survived mainly in the chronicles and in Ibn Khaldun, who knew them as the mountaineers who had once made a caliphate.
