About Mandja People
The Mandja are a savanna farming people of the central Central African Republic, based in the country around Sibut, Dekoa and Kaga-Bandoro. Older national estimates put them at roughly 13 percent of the population, which makes them one of the country's major peoples, alongside the Gbaya and the Banda. Language is the first thing that holds them together. Manza belongs to the Gbaya cluster of Niger-Congo, which is usually placed within Ubangian. It is close to the speech of the Gbaya to the west and quite separate from the Banda languages of their neighbors to the east. Like nearly everyone in the country, Mandja speakers also use Sango, the national lingua franca, and keep French for school and government. Village life depends on cassava, millet, sorghum and groundnuts, with hunting and gathering on the side. Most Mandja are Christian, either Catholic or Protestant, because of mission work in the colonial era. Older ideas about ancestors, spirits and sorcery still shape how people explain illness, bad luck and sudden death. Like the peoples around them, the Mandja have long marked the step into adulthood with initiation, known across the region by the Sango word ganza.
The biggest turning point in their history came around 1900. As France pushed toward Lake Chad, its supply line ran straight through Mandja country, from the Ubangi River north to the posts of Fort-Sibut and Fort-Crampel, now Sibut and Kaga-Bandoro. Supplies were carried on people's backs, and huge numbers of Mandja men were forced to work as porters. Fields went untended, famine and disease followed, and whole villages fled into the bush to escape the recruiters. The colonial state later added compulsory cotton growing and labor drafts, so the pressure never really let up. Since the crisis that broke out in 2013, the roads and towns of Kémo and Nana-Grébizi have seen repeated fighting between armed groups, and camps for displaced people grew up around Kaga-Bandoro. Through all of it, the Mandja have stayed on their land. They still farm the same savanna that their great-grandparents were marched away from, carrying loads bound for Chad.
