About Kyzyl People
The Kyzyl are the northern branch of the Khakas. Their country is the forest-steppe where the White and Black Iyus rivers come down out of the Kuznetsk Alatau and meet to form the Chulym. Their name for themselves, khyzyl, is the Turkic word for red. It has no connection to Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva, far to the southeast. What marks them as a group within the Khakas is where they live. They held the northern edge of the Khakas world, where the steppe gives way to taiga and where Russian settlement arrived early and pressed hardest.
They speak, or their grandparents spoke, the Kyzyl dialect of Khakas, a Turkic language of southern Siberia. When a written Khakas standard was built in the Soviet period, it rested on the Kachin and Sagay speech of the south. That left Kyzyl villagers learning to read a Khakas that was not quite their own. Russian is now the working language for most people, and the dialect lives on largely at home.
For centuries the Kyzyl herded horses, cattle and sheep and also hunted and gathered in the nearby forest. Close contact with Russian farmers pulled them toward the plow. Society was organized by the seok, the patrilineal clan, and marrying inside your own seok was forbidden. Orthodox Christianity came with the Russian state, but baptism was added on top of older practice rather than replacing it. Shamans, sacred mountains and the feeding of the hearth fire kept their place in ordinary life well into the twentieth century.
History reshaped them twice. They were brought into the Russian fur-tribute system in the seventeenth century. In the nineteenth century they were governed through their own Kyzyl Steppe Duma, one of the native councils set up under the imperial reforms of the 1820s, and that council gave the name real administrative weight. Then in 1923 the separate Kachin, Sagay, Koibal, Beltir and Kyzyl communities were folded together under the single name Khakas. Kyzyl identity did not vanish, but it became a matter of region and family. People carry it through seok names, local speech and home villages in the Shira and Ordzhonikidzevsky districts of Khakassia and across the line in Krasnoyarsk Krai. The same valleys are thick with ancient rock art and burial mounds, among them the ridges called Sunduki on the White Iyus. The Kyzyl have lived beside that landscape for as long as anyone has written about them.
