About Katagans People

The best-known branch lives in northern Afghanistan, on the river plains around Kunduz, Baghlan and Takhar. Until the 1960s this area was officially Qataghan Province. Qataghan Uzbek chiefs ran Kunduz as their own state in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The best remembered, Murad Beg, spread his power into Badakhshan in the early 1800s. British travelers of that period wrote about a ruler who held visitors until they paid and raided his neighbors for captives. The Afghan state took over the region in the mid-nineteenth century. Later governments drained its malarial marshes for cotton and settled Pashtun farmers on the new land. Today the Qataghan share their old territory with Pashtuns, Tajiks and Hazaras.
