About Kanikkaran People
The Kanikkaran, usually just called the Kani, are the hill people of the far southern Western Ghats. They live in the steep, forested country around Agasthyamalai, where Kerala meets Tamil Nadu. Their settlements sit inside and along the edges of protected forests such as Peppara, Neyyar and Kalakkad Mundanthurai. What sets them apart is how closely they know that forest: which plants heal, which ones keep a person walking all day, and where the elephants move after rain. Both states list them as a Scheduled Tribe. Because the state border runs through their homeland, Kani in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam grow up around Malayalam, while those in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli grow up around Tamil.
Their own language is Dravidian and falls between those two larger neighbors. It is close enough to both that speakers move easily into either, and it has never had a script of its own. Most Kani are counted as Hindu, but daily religious life rests on older ground: hill deities, ancestor spirits and the authority of the plathi, the ritual healer who keeps the chants.
