About Iraqi Kurd People

Iraqi Kurds comprise approximately 18% of the Iraqi population — approximately 7+ million, concentrated in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok provinces — substantially autonomous federal region within Iraq since 1991, with separate Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Peshmerga security forces). The Iraqi Kurdish population is the third-largest national Kurdish population (after Turkey and Iran). Predominantly Sunni Muslim. The Sorani Kurdish dialect is the standard Kurdish language of Iraqi Kurdistan; Kurmanji is also spoken in the northern KRG areas. The Iraqi Kurdish community has experienced multiple periods of state violence including the 1986-1989 Anfal Genocide perpetrated by Saddam Hussein's regime (the genocide killed an estimated 50,000-180,000 Kurds including the documented Halabja chemical-weapons attack of 16 March 1988 that killed approximately 5,000 Kurdish civilians) and subsequent post-2003 demographic disruption. The 2017 Kurdistan independence referendum (with 92% support) was not internationally recognized.
