About Haush People
The Haush, who called themselves Manek'enk, were a hunting people of the far eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego, and they ceased to exist as a distinct community in the early twentieth century, their last survivors absorbed into Selk'nam families and the settler population of Argentine Tierra del Fuego. They are usually remembered as the poorer cousins of the Selk'nam, and that is partly true. What set the Haush apart was how they answered that. They stayed foot hunters and never built canoes like the Yámana to the south, but they turned to the sea anyway: clubbing seals on the rookeries, working the shoreline for shellfish and birds, and walking the beaches for the stranded whale that could feed a camp for weeks.
Their language belonged to the Chonan family, alongside Selk'nam and the Tehuelche tongues of mainland Patagonia. It was a separate language, not a dialect, and the Selk'nam regarded the Haush as the older people of the island. That seniority carried into ritual. The Hain, the long initiation ceremony in which masked spirits tested adolescent boys, is famous today as a Selk'nam institution, but Selk'nam tradition, as recorded by anthropologist Anne Chapman, held that it had come to them from the Haush. One of the earliest detailed European descriptions of any Fuegian people is also of the Haush.
