The Gyele, known locally as Bagyeli or Bakola, are a forest people of southern Cameroon whose identity rests on two things: close working knowledge of the coastal rainforest, and a long, lopsided relationship with the farming villages around them. Outsiders have filed them among the Central African foragers once called Pygmies, a label many find demeaning. Their forest runs from Lolodorf and Bipindi toward Kribi and south to Campo on the Equatorial Guinea border, and a smaller community lives on the far side of that line.
Like nearly every forager people in the region, the Gyele speak a language that ties them to farmers rather than setting them apart. Gyele belongs to the Makaa-Njem branch of Bantu and sits closest to Kwasio, the language of the Ngumba and Mabi, which hints at how old those ties are.
