About Enggano People
The Enggano are the indigenous people of a single low, forested island roughly a hundred kilometers off the southwest coast of Sumatra, out past the shelf where the Indian Ocean starts running deep. Six villages hold most of them: Banjar Sari, Meok, Apoho, Malakoni, Kaana and Kahyapu, strung along a coast of mangrove and beach forest. The name of the island is not theirs. Portuguese and Dutch sailors called it Engano, meaning mistake or deception, and it stuck, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the place entered the European record.
Their language is why linguists keep coming back. Enggano is Austronesian, but so far from its relatives in sound and vocabulary that for decades serious scholars argued about whether it belonged to the family at all, or was something older wearing borrowed clothes. Recent comparative work has settled the question of ancestry and left the strangeness intact: the language ran through drastic sound changes and replaced a great deal of its inherited vocabulary, and it sits nothing like the Malay spoken across the water in Bengkulu. Perhaps fifteen hundred people still speak it. Indonesian is winning, at school and increasingly at home.
Society runs on clans. Five customary clans hold rights in land, and a sixth exists to take in outsiders, which is how Javanese, Bugis and Bengkulu settlers are folded into a system that would otherwise have no place for them. That mechanism matters more than it sounds, because the Enggano are now a minority on their own island. Dutch officials counted several thousand of them in the 1860s. Smallpox, influenza and other imported epidemics, plus the social wreckage that came with them, cut the population to a few hundred by the middle of the twentieth century, one of the sharpest collapses recorded in the archipelago. Numbers have recovered since, but migration arrived faster.
Most Enggano are Protestant, the result of Dutch mission work early in the twentieth century, which sets them apart from the Muslim mainland a day's boat ride away. Adat, the customary law of clan and land, does the daily work that religion does not. People fish, grow taro, bananas and coconut, and wait on a ferry that runs when it runs. The island sits directly above the Sunda subduction zone, so earthquakes here are a condition rather than an event.
