About Dowayo People
The Dowayo are hill farmers of northern Cameroon, and most English readers meet them through a single book. Their language, Doyayo, belongs to the Adamawa group of Niger-Congo languages, in a small cluster that also includes Dii and Vere. Many Dowayo also speak Fulfulde, the language of the Fulbe and the common trade language across the north, and French is used in school and government. The Fulbe long called them Namchi. Rainmaking is a serious office: a rain chief is believed to hold and release the rains, and in farming country that is real power.
