About Dowayo People
The Dowayo are hill farmers of northern Cameroon, and most English readers meet them through a single book. Nigel Barley's The Innocent Anthropologist is a comic account of his fieldwork in their villages in the late 1970s, and it made them an unlikely fixture of the anthropology shelf. The book is funny and often sharp, but it is one outsider's story, told largely at his own expense, and the Dowayo have carried on with their own. Their country is the hill and savanna land around Poli, the chief town of Faro department in the North Region, where villages farm millet and other crops in the shadow of the hills.
Their language, Doyayo, belongs to the Adamawa group of Niger-Congo languages, in a small cluster that also includes Dii and Vere. Many Dowayo also speak Fulfulde, the language of the Fulbe and the common trade language across the north, and French is used in school and government. The Fulbe long called them Namchi. That name lives on in the art market in the Namji dolls, small carved wooden figures dressed in beads and cowrie shells, traditionally kept by girls and tied to hopes of bearing children.
Christianity and Islam both have followers, but the older ritual order has held on, and it is where the Dowayo are most distinctive. Its centerpiece is the circumcision festival. It is held only once every several years rather than every year, so boys of widely different ages go through it together, and until then a male is not counted a full man, whatever his age. Barley's sequel, A Plague of Caterpillars, follows his return for one of these festivals and shows that the rite runs on its own schedule, not a visitor's. For the Dowayo, death is a process rather than a single event. Funerals are occasions for killing cattle, and at a later stage the skulls of the dead are recovered and honored in ceremonies that settle them among the ancestors. Rainmaking is a serious office: a rain chief is believed to hold and release the rains, and in farming country that is real power.
