Few families have lived by the bow in centuries. Across most of their range the Dhanak became farmers, sharecroppers and farm laborers, and in the northwest many worked as weavers. Owning little or no land shapes how the state classifies them today. They are listed as a Scheduled Caste in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. In Bihar the Dhanuk are one of the larger communities among the Extremely Backward Classes, a bloc big enough to matter in every state election. Bihar's Dhanuks are often grouped politically with the Kurmi, and parties court them on that basis.
There is no separate Dhanak language. People speak what their region speaks: Haryanvi, Punjabi and Hindi in the west, Bhojpuri and Hindi farther east, and Maithili in north Bihar and across the border in Nepal. All of these are Indo-Aryan. As a result, a Dhanuk family in the Terai has more in common with its Maithili-speaking neighbors of other castes than with Dhanaks in Haryana. Religious life is Hindu and follows the region as much as the caste. In Mithila that means keeping the Chhath fast at ponds and riverbanks along with the rest of the village. People marry within the community but outside their own clan, which is the usual pattern for caste groups across the north.
In Nepal the Dhanuk are a Madheshi people of the eastern and central Terai, with large numbers in districts such as Siraha, Saptari, Dhanusha and Mahottari. The 2011 census counted roughly 220,000 of them. Things are changing in similar ways on both sides of the border. More children stay in school, the community has a louder political voice, and young people leave their villages for work in Indian cities, in Kathmandu or abroad. The archer ancestors survive mostly in the name and as a point of pride.
