About Damal People
The Damal are a mountain people of New Guinea's central highlands. They live in the high valleys on the northern side of the range whose southern slopes drop toward the Grasberg mine and the lowlands of Mimika. They are easiest to understand through their neighbors. Across the divide live the Amungme, who speak the same language and share much of the same history, so closely that outsiders often treat the two as one people split by a ridge. On their own side, the Damal have long shared valleys such as Ilaga and Beoga with Lani and Moni communities. They trade with them, marry them and have at times fought them, and many Damal grow up moving between their own language, Lani and Indonesian.
Their language goes by several names: Damal, Amung or Uhunduni. It is a Papuan language. Linguists have tentatively placed it in the huge Trans-New Guinea family, but the links are thin, and it stands well apart from the Dani languages spoken a valley over. Daily life still turns on sweet potato gardens cut into steep ground and on pigs. Pigs carry the weight of bride payments, feasts and the settling of disputes.
Christianity arrived in the 1950s, when missionaries of the Christian and Missionary Alliance reached the Ilaga and Beoga valleys, and it spread fast. Missionary writers later reported that the Damal had a tradition called hai, a promised age of peace and plenty, and that some elders took the gospel as its arrival. Whatever you make of that account, the outcome is clear. Most Damal today are Protestant, many of them in the Kingmi church that grew out of that mission, and Sunday worship sits beside older rules about clan duties, land and compensation.
The past half century has been hard on these valleys. Indonesian rule from the 1960s and the growth of the Freeport mine drew many Damal down to Timika for wages, schooling and clinics, and turned land and compensation into lasting political fights. More recently, Puncak regency has become one of the sharpest fronts in the armed conflict between Indonesian security forces and West Papuan independence fighters, and villages around Beoga and Ilaga have been caught up in violence and displacement. Even so, most Damal still call the high valleys home, with their gardens, pig herds and clan ties.
