About Chứt People
The Chứt are one of the smallest peoples officially recognized in Vietnam. Fewer than 8,000 of them live in a few valleys among the limestone ridges of the Annamite Range, in western Quảng Bình near the Lao border. Quảng Bình became part of Quảng Trị Province in 2025. The name is usually translated as rock or rocky mountain, and it fits: for some of the communities grouped under it, the karst was a place to live, not just a view. Chứt is an official umbrella name, not one that everyone chose. It covers local groups who long thought of themselves as separate. Among them are the Sách and Mày, who farm in the river valleys, the Mã Liềng, the small Arem community near Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng, and the Rục, whose recent history drew national attention.
In the late 1950s, Vietnamese border guards came across Rục families living in rock shelters and forest camps in the mountains of Minh Hóa. They lived by hunting, gathering and taking starch from forest palms. The government moved them into permanent villages, and the shift from foraging to settled farming has shaped the community ever since. It brought schools and clinics, and it also left the Rục heavily dependent on state support. The forest is still close, both as a source of food and as a point of identity.
