The Celsitani were one of the native peoples of ancient Sardinia, living on the island during the Roman period, and they are known today from exactly one source: the geographer Ptolemy, who listed them around 150 AD in his catalog of Sardinian tribes. Nothing records their end. Most likely they were absorbed into the island's Latin-speaking population, and their descendants are among the Sardinians of today. That single mention is worth reading closely, because it is all there is. Ptolemy works down the island from north to south, naming tribes in order, and he sets the Celsitani beside the Corpicenses, below the Rucensi and above the Scapitani and Siculensi. That puts them somewhere in the central or south-central band of the island, probably away from the coastal cities that Carthage and then Rome cared most about. The name has a Latin-style ending shared with others on the list, such as the Noritani of Nora and the Solcitani of Sulci, names built on towns. If the Celsitani were named for a place, that place has not been securely identified.

What can be said about them comes from context, not testimony. Sardinia had been home since the Bronze Age to the Nuragic culture, builders of the thousands of stone towers, called nuraghi, that still stand across the island. The tribes Ptolemy names were heirs of that world after centuries of Punic and then Roman rule, the latter beginning in 238 BC. They presumably spoke some form of the pre-Latin language usually called Paleo-Sardinian, which was never written down at length and survives mostly in place names and a scattering of words in modern Sardinian. By Ptolemy's day Latin was pushing inland, and it eventually won outright: Sardinian is a Romance language, and one of the most conservative. Roman writers had little patience for the island's interior. They called the highlands Barbaria, a name that lives on as Barbagia, and treated the inland peoples as herders and raiders to be contained, not described. That attitude is why a tribe like the Celsitani comes down to us as a bare entry in a geographer's table, with no chief, no town and no battle attached. Whether they lived in the highlands proper or on their edge is not known. Their legacy is an honest kind of absence. The Celsitani are a reminder that most ancient peoples left no voice of their own, only the notice of a foreign geographer working from secondhand reports. Genetic studies show that modern Sardinians, especially in the interior, carry unusually strong continuity with the island's prehistoric population. The people Ptolemy counted almost certainly did not vanish. They stopped being counted under that name.
