About Narentines People
The Narentines were a South Slavic people who held the eastern Adriatic coast between the Cetina and the Neretva, in what is now southern Croatia, from around the seventh century until they were absorbed into the Croatian kingdom in the eleventh. Outsiders named them for the river: Narenta is the Latin form of Neretva. The Byzantines had a second name for their country, Pagania, the land of the pagans, because they refused baptism long after every Slavic neighbor had taken it and accepted it only late in the ninth century, under pressure from Constantinople and as much a diplomatic transaction as a conversion. Constantine VII, writing a century afterward, still called them the Pagani, listed their three counties as Rastoka, Mokro and Dalen, and recorded that the islands of Brač, Hvar, Korčula and Mljet were theirs.
What they were known for was piracy, and they were very good at it. The Adriatic funnels shipping through a narrow lane between those islands and the mainland, and the Narentines sat on it. Byzantine sources name their two ship types, the larger sagena and the smaller condura, both shallow and fast, built for channel work rather than open water. They took Venetian merchants returning from Apulia, they saw off the punitive fleets sent after them, and in 887 they killed Doge Pietro I Candiano in battle at Mokro, near modern Makarska. Venice, unable to clear them out, paid an annual tribute for safe passage for more than a hundred years, until Doge Pietro II Orseolo sailed the length of the coast in the year 1000 and forced their submission. That is usually given as the end of them as an independent power, though the trade outlived the polity: the corsairs of Omiš, who worked the same water into the thirteenth century, are commonly traced to the same stock. Nothing survives that the Narentines wrote about themselves. Everything known comes from the people they robbed, which is worth holding in mind while reading it. To Venice they were a standing cost of doing business, to Byzantium a nuisance on the flank, and to themselves presumably neither. Their descendants are the Croats of the Makarska littoral and the lower Neretva valley, living in the same villages, on the same coast.
