About Taurisci People
The Taurisci were a Celtic people of the southeastern Alps, present in Greek and Roman sources from about the third century BC and gone as a separate name within two centuries, folded into the Roman province of Noricum. Their ground was the Ljubljana basin, the Sava and Drava valleys, and the mountains of what is now Slovenia and southern Austria, with a foot on the passes carrying traffic between the Danube and the head of the Adriatic. Nobody descends from them cleanly. The population was Romanized, then overlaid by Slavic settlement in the sixth and seventh centuries AD, and what survives is buried: flat cremation cemeteries, coin hoards, iron. Pliny wrote flatly that the Norici had once been called Taurisci. Strabo kept the two apart. That confusion is ancient and has never been settled.
Two things gave them weight out of proportion to their numbers. The first was gold. Polybius described a strike in Taurisci country inland of Aquileia where a man could dig two feet and find nuggets: Italians poured in, the price of gold in Italy fell by roughly a third within a couple of months, and the Taurisci then threw the prospectors out and worked the ground themselves. The second was iron. The ore of the eastern Alps is naturally rich in manganese, and the steel smelted from it, ferrum Noricum to the Romans, was good enough that Roman armies wanted it for blades. Trade ran through hilltop emporia like the Magdalensberg in Carinthia, where Italian merchants kept house among locals. Rome held a treaty of friendship with the kingdom here and in 113 BC sent an army north to honor it, only to be beaten by the Cimbri at Noreia, a place still not located on any map. Fifty years later the Dacian king Burebista broke Taurisci power from the east. Annexation, when it came around 15 BC, was almost quiet. The goddess Noreia outlasted all of it, worshiped under Roman rule as Isis Noreia by people who no longer called themselves Taurisci.
