The modern people of Konavle live on the same land under a later form of the name. What set the Kanalites apart was not a separate culture. It was a territory of their own and a name that a Byzantine emperor thought worth writing down. Nearly everything known about them as a people comes from the De Administrando Imperio, a handbook compiled for Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus around 950. Constantine gave them their own entry. He also wrote that Kanali and neighboring Terbounia, the country around Trebinje, formed a single land whose princes answered to the ruler of Serbia. He counted the Kanalites among the coastal Slavs descended from unbaptized Serbs. Many historians now read that claim partly as a picture of tenth-century political loyalties rather than a final word on where the Kanalites came from.
Their land was small but useful: a fertile field set between limestone ridges and the sea, with the ruins of Roman Epidaurum, modern Cavtat, at its western edge. Constantine said the name Kanali meant a cart road, because the flat ground let people do their work with carts. A likelier source is Latin canalis, probably a memory of the Roman aqueduct that once carried water to Epidaurum. The Kanalites spoke an early South Slavic language and kept Slavic pagan practices before Christianity took firm hold. Constantine lists them among the coastal Slavs who asked Emperor Basil I for baptism in the later ninth century. That placed them on the fault line between Byzantine and Roman church influence, which ran through this corner of the Balkans for centuries.
Later medieval sources describe Konavle as a district and no longer mention the Kanalites as a people. Duklja, the Serbian Nemanjić rulers and Bosnian lords each held the territory in turn. In the early fifteenth century the Republic of Ragusa bought it in two stages and made it Dubrovnik's farmland. The Konavljani who worked those fields became known for silk embroidery and a folk costume that is now a symbol of the whole Dubrovnik area. The Kanalites themselves left no writing. What survives of them is a few lines in an emperor's handbook and a name that is still on the map.
