Bugis-Malays Erotic

The Bugis-Malays are what happens when a seafaring people lose a war at home and win several abroad. Their ancestors were Bugis from the southwestern peninsula of Sulawesi, traders, sailors and hired fighters who left in large numbers after the Dutch and their allies broke Makassar in the late 1660s. They scattered across the Malay world, and around the Strait of Malacca they did more than settle. They married into the courts, took offices, and within a few generations had become Malay in language and law while keeping a firm memory of where the family came from.

The turning point came in the 1720s, when five brothers of Luwu nobility backed one claimant to the Johor throne against another. Their price was a permanent office: the Yang Dipertuan Muda of Riau, an underking's seat held by Bugis-descended men for the better part of two centuries, with real power over trade and war beneath a Malay sultan. From the same family came Raja Lumu, installed in 1766 as the first Sultan of Selangor, whose line still holds that throne. Raja Haji died fighting the Dutch near Malacca in 1784 and is honored as a national hero in Indonesia. His grandson Raja Ali Haji, working on Penyengat island, completed the Tuhfat al-Nafis, a chronicle of these Bugis and Malay dealings, and wrote early works on Malay grammar. A descendant of Sulawesi migrants helped set the standard for the Malay language.

Today Bugis-Malays live mostly in Johor, Selangor, Singapore and the Riau Islands, with related communities in coastal Borneo. They are Sunni Muslims of the Shafi'i school, and in Malaysia they are counted simply as Malays, since the constitutional definition turns on Islam, Malay speech and Malay custom rather than bloodline. Most speak Malay at home. Bugis, a South Sulawesi language only distantly related to Malay within the Austronesian family, survives mainly among later arrivals, notably around Pontian and Benut on Johor's west coast, where families came as coconut smallholders in the nineteenth century and after.

What stays distinct is carried in names, food and pride. The honorific Daeng still turns up in family names, and in Selangor and Riau the title Raja marks descent from the Bugis underkings. Burasak, rice cooked in coconut milk and wrapped in banana leaf, appears on Hari Raya tables in Johor. The Bugis style of keris, with its sharply angled grip, spread across the peninsula. Ancestry still carries political weight: royal houses and more than one Malaysian prime minister have claimed it, and a politician's jibe about "Bugis pirates" at a 2017 rally drew a public rebuke from the Selangor palace.
