Through the 1790s Pemulwuy led raids on the new farms around Parramatta, Toongabbie and the Georges River. In 1797 he was shot several times at Parramatta and held under guard, then escaped. He was killed in 1802, and his head was preserved and sent to Joseph Banks in England. Nobody knows where it is now, and descendants and supporters still call for its return. His son Tedbury kept up the fight for several more years.
By the time that war peaked, the clan had already been badly hurt. The smallpox epidemic of 1789 swept through the Sydney clans about a year after the First Fleet landed, and land grants along the rivers pushed survivors away from the creeks, flats and fishing places their lives were built around.
