Ask a Beary where home is and the answer lands somewhere on the Karnataka coast: Mangaluru, Ullal, Bantwal, the river towns of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, or just across the border in Kerala's Kasaragod district. The Bearys are the long-established Muslim community of this coast. What sets them apart from other Muslims in Karnataka is a language of their own. Beary Bashe is a Dravidian language close to Malayalam, shaped by centuries of living beside Tulu and Kannada speakers. It never settled on a script of its own: older writers used an Arabic-based Malayalam script, and today it usually appears in Kannada letters. Many Bearys move easily between Beary, Tulu and Kannada, which shows how deeply they belong to Tulu Nadu.

The name points to the marketplace. The most common explanation traces it to the Tulu word byara, meaning trade. Another links it to the Arabic word for sea, and either one fits. Arab merchants sailing the monsoon routes along this coast brought Islam to its ports early, and local converts and intermarried families grew into a trading class. Tradition credits the Zeenath Baksh mosque near Mangaluru's old port to that first generation of Muslim arrivals. Commerce has stayed central to how the community sees itself ever since.

Bearys are Sunni Muslims of the Shafi'i school. They share that legal tradition with the Mappilas of Kerala and much of the Indian Ocean coast, and it sets them apart from the Hanafi practice of most Urdu-speaking Muslims inland. Friday prayers, madrasa classes for children and the Ramadan calendar set the pace of ordinary life. Shrine devotion runs alongside: the dargah at Ullal, just south of Mangaluru, is a major pilgrimage site whose festival draws visitors from well outside the community.

Modern Beary life has been reshaped by the Gulf. Since the oil boom of the 1970s, large numbers of Beary men have worked in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait, and the money they send home has built houses, schools and businesses. The same decades brought a push for cultural recognition. Karnataka created a Beary Sahitya Academy in 2007 to support the language and its writers. Then Byari (2011), the first feature film in Beary Bashe, shared India's National Film Award for Best Feature Film. Outsiders had long lumped the Bearys together as simply coastal Muslims, and the award was a public claim to their own name.
