Households have long been sorted into charva and chomur, herders and cultivators, though these were never castes: a family that lost its flocks took up land, and a family that rebuilt its flocks went back to the steppe. They speak Turkmen, an Oghuz language, closer to Turkish and Azerbaijani than to the Kazakh and Uzbek of their northern neighbors, and the Yomut dialect is one of the two, along with Teke, from which the literary standard was assembled.
They are Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school, historically with few formal clergy and a great deal of authority vested in the owlad, hereditary holy lineages traced to saints and to the early Muslim community. Because the owlad stood outside the tribal genealogies, they could arbitrate feuds no ordinary elder could touch, and their shrines still draw visitors. The nineteenth century was hard on them. Yomut horsemen raided into Persian territory and fed the slave markets of Khiva, then rebelled against Khiva repeatedly, and in 1873 a Russian punitive column under Kaufman burned them out in a campaign that observers who rode with it described with open unease. The border settlement that followed, then Soviet collectivization, pushed families south into Iran, while Reza Shah's forced settlement policy in the same years pressed the other way. What survived all of it is a body of craft. Yomut weaving is recognizable to collectors at a glance for its dyrnak and kepse figures in madder red, and for the asmalyk, the five sided trapping hung on the flanks of the bride's camel in a wedding procession.
