About Yariguí People

Yariguí territory ran from the lowlands along the Magdalena, Opón and Sogamoso rivers up into the humid ridges now called the Serranía de los Yariguíes. It was hot, wet, densely wooded land, and people lived from it by fishing, hunting and farming. Their language died with them and was barely written down. It is usually placed in the Cariban family, alongside the speech of the neighboring Opón and Carare peoples. That set the Yariguí apart from the Chibchan-speaking Guane on the plateau to the east. Almost nothing reliable about their religion was recorded before soldiers and missionaries arrived, and the little that survives comes to us through hostile Spanish accounts.
The first break came in 1536, when Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada's expedition worked its way up the Magdalena and stopped at a riverside settlement known as La Tora. The Spaniards named the place for its red bluffs, Barrancas Bermejas, then turned up the Opón toward the Muisca highlands. Later trails between the river and the colonial town of Vélez ran through the same forests, and those routes kept a reputation for ambush well into the colonial era. In Barrancabermeja, local tradition remembers a cacique named Pipatón as the leader of Yariguí resistance, though the stories about him mix record and legend.
The name has outlasted the people. The Serranía de los Yariguíes became a national natural park in 2005, and a brush finch subspecies described from its cloud forests was named after them. Barrancabermeja, now the oil refining center of the Magdalena, is served by Yariguíes Airport. The Yariguí left no written voice of their own. What remains is a mountain range's name, a regional legend and the outline of a people who stood in the way of the conquest's main road inland.
