About Guayupe People
The Guayupe were an Arawakan-speaking farming people who lived where the eastern Andes of Colombia drop into the plains, in what is now the department of Meta, from well before the Spanish arrived until conquest, mining and disease broke them apart in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. No recognized community carries the name today. Their survivors were folded into mission towns, neighboring groups and the mixed llanero population that later filled the region. What marks them out is position: they held the hinge between two worlds, the cold Muisca highlands above and the hot grasslands and forest rivers of the Orinoco basin below.
Their country ran along the Ariari, Guape and Guayabero rivers and the foothills behind them. Next to them lived the Sae, a closely allied people whom the chroniclers almost always mention in the same breath, and their language, barely recorded, is generally grouped with Achagua and the other Arawakan tongues of the llanos. Villages were built as a ring of large communal houses around an open plaza, and the fields grew bitter manioc for cassava bread, along with maize and cotton. Trade ran uphill. Lowland goods such as cotton, feathers, honey and the snuff called yopo went to the Muisca, and salt, woven mantles and gold pieces came back down.
Most of what is known comes from Fray Pedro de Aguado, writing a generation after contact. He describes chiefs with little power to command, shamans who worked with tobacco and yopo, and a funeral rite that startled the Spanish: a dead chief was cremated and his ashes stirred into maize beer, which the mourners then drank. He also reports the couvade, with a new father fasting after a birth.
The first expeditions to reach them marched under German captains, agents of the Welser concession in Venezuela. Georg Hohermuth, Nikolaus Federmann and Philipp von Hutten all pushed through Guayupe land in the 1530s and 1540s chasing rumors of gold, and Federmann climbed from here to the Bogotá plateau. The lasting blow came in 1555, when Juan de Avellaneda founded San Juan de los Llanos to work the gold of the Ariari. Encomienda labor, mining and epidemic disease did the rest.
The legacy is mostly underground and on the map. Archaeologists working in the upper Ariari have recovered their pottery and village sites, and San Juan de Arama, heir to Avellaneda's mining camp, still stands in the middle of their old territory.
