About White Paraguayan People
White Paraguayans comprise approximately 7-10% of the population. The community traces ancestry primarily to Spanish colonial settlement (Castilian, Andalusian, Basque) and to several distinct 19th-20th c. immigration waves: 19th c. German and Italian immigration to Asunción and the eastern colonization zones; the substantial Mennonite-Paraguayan community of the Chaco (the Menno, Fernheim, and Neuland colonies, founded by Russian-Mennonite refugees in the 1920s-1940s, with subsequent migrations from Canada and Belize, totaling approximately 30,000-40,000 in the Boquerón and Presidente Hayes departments); Slavic and Eastern European immigration; and the large Lebanese-Paraguayan and Syrian-Paraguayan business diaspora concentrated in Ciudad del Este and Asunción. Concentrated in Asunción, Encarnación, Ciudad del Este, and the Chaco Mennonite colonies.
