They hunted with long bows and gathered the pine nuts that ripen in the cold months. Their language, also called Xokleng or Laklãnõ, belongs to the Southern Jê branch of the Macro-Jê stock. Its closest relative is Kaingang, spoken by a much larger neighboring people of the interior highlands. The two languages are related but distinct. Portuguese now dominates daily life, and schools on the reserve teach the language to keep it spoken.
Their modern history turns on 1914. For decades, German and Italian colonies in the Itajaí valley had pushed into Xokleng land, and colonists and local authorities paid armed men called bugreiros to attack their camps. That year Eduardo de Lima e Silva Hoerhann, an agent of Brazil's Indian Protection Service, made peaceful contact with a band on the upper Itajaí. The killings stopped, but disease followed and cut the population sharply. Survivors were settled on what is now the Ibirama-Laklãnõ Indigenous Land, which they share with Kaingang and Guarani families. In the late twentieth century the North Dam, built to protect downstream towns like Blumenau from floods, took valley land from the reserve. Later a dispute over the territory's boundaries reached Brazil's Supreme Court. In that case, in 2023, the court rejected the marco temporal, the idea that Indigenous land rights depend on occupying the land on the day the 1988 constitution took effect. Congress soon wrote the doctrine into law anyway, and the fight continues.
Most Xokleng today are evangelical Christians, and Pentecostal churches, rooted there since the mid-twentieth century, anchor much of village life. Older forms still survive in memory and in deliberate revival. The anthropologist Greg Urban recorded origin stories performed as a ceremonial dialogue, told one syllable at a time between two men.
