About Võros People
The Võros are the southeastern Estonians who never quite folded into the standard. The difference between the two peoples is less linguistic than confessional and historical, with Setos shaped by Orthodox Pskov and Võros by Lutheran Livonia.
That Lutheran inheritance is quiet in practice. Estonia is one of the least churchgoing countries in Europe and Võromaa is no exception, but the parish church, the graveyard and the midsummer bonfire still structure the year. A South Estonian literary language existed for two centuries, and the first Estonian New Testament, printed in 1686, was in the southern tongue, decades before a northern version appeared. Standardization in the nineteenth century then sidelined it, and Soviet-era schooling treated Võro as village talk to be unlearned. In April 2023 the first Congress of the Võro People declared the Võros an indigenous people and asked the Estonian state to say the same. UNESCO listed the Võromaa smoke sauna tradition in 2014, and it remains a working part of rural life rather than a heritage display.
