Over the twentieth century, as the state pushed nomadic groups toward permanent settlement, they moved into fixed communities along the rivers. The upper Rajang has kept changing around them since, as logging roads and large hydroelectric dams remade country that once only boats could reach.
The Ukit language is Austronesian and is usually placed in the Kajang group of the Rajang basin, alongside Sekapan and Kejaman, rather than with the Kayan and Kenyah speech of the larger upriver peoples. It has very few speakers left. Ukit people typically also use Malay, and often the languages of the neighbors they live beside, which keeps daily life workable but leaves the old language squarely endangered.
