About Tsanars People
The Tsanars were a highland people of the central Caucasus who held the Darial Gorge, in what is now the Khevi district of northern Georgia, from antiquity into the early Middle Ages, and who by about the eleventh century had been absorbed into the eastern Georgians. After that their name drops out of the record. What made them a people in the eyes of their neighbors was the ground they stood on. The Darial is the one practical road through the middle of the Caucasus range, and whoever sat in it decided who passed between the steppe and the south. A name that looks like theirs, the Sanaroi, appears in Ptolemy's geography in the second century, and a seventh-century Armenian geography places the Tsanars squarely at the pass. Arab writers knew them as the Sanariyya.
Their moment came in the eighth and ninth centuries, when the Caliphate and its emirs at Tbilisi were trying to hold eastern Georgia. The Tsanars came down from the mountains into Kakheti and became the fighting core of a new principality there, ruled by a prince who carried the church title of chorepiscopus. Arab authors applied the name Sanariyya to the whole principality. In 853 the Abbasid general Bugha al-Kabir, fresh from burning Tbilisi, turned on them and was beaten back repeatedly. One Arab historian reports that the mountaineers wrote to the Byzantine emperor, the Khazar ruler and the lord of the Slavs for help, a fair measure of how far a small highland people could reach when it controlled a pass.
Who they were by origin is still argued. Many scholars read them as a Nakh people, kin to the ancestors of today's Chechens and Ingush, who gradually took up Georgian speech and Georgian Christianity. Others treat them as Georgian highlanders from the start. They were Christian by the time outsiders described them, and al-Masudi, writing in the tenth century, recorded their own curious claim to descend from an ancient Arab tribe, the sort of borrowed pedigree that carried prestige on a Muslim frontier. No text in a Tsanar language survives, so the question may never close.
Their legacy is political more than ethnographic. The Kakhetian state they helped build held its own against the emirate for some three centuries and was folded into the united Georgian kingdom in the early twelfth century. Their likeliest heirs are the Mokheves, the Georgian highlanders who still live below Mount Kazbek along the road the Tsanars once guarded.
