About Trique People
The Trique are a small people wedged into the highlands of northwestern Oaxaca, surrounded on every side by Mixtec neighbors and defined in part by never having been absorbed into them. Their territory is compact, a few hundred square miles of steep, broken country, and it is really three territories: San Andres Chicahuaxtla and San Martin Itunyoso sit high in cold pine country, while San Juan Copala lies lower and warmer to the south. Each town holds its own variety of the language, distinct enough that speakers from two of them will often settle into Spanish with each other. The language itself belongs to the Mixtecan branch of Oto-Manguean, kin to Mixtec and Cuicatec and to nothing at all outside Mesoamerica. It also carries one of the most elaborate tone systems ever documented: linguists working on the Itunyoso and Chicahuaxtla varieties count nine or ten contrastive tones, pitch alone separating words that are otherwise identical. Roughly thirty thousand people speak it, and unlike much of Indigenous Mexico, children are still learning it, including children born in California.

One point of pride travels with them: Trique youth basketball teams, coached in the mountains and known for playing barefoot, have been beating larger and better funded opponents at national and international tournaments since the early 2010s.
