The Tlaxcaltecs are the Nahua of a high, cold basin east of the Valley of Mexico, hemmed in by the volcano they call Matlalcueye and the Spanish renamed La Malinche. Before 1519 their country was not a kingdom but a federation: four allied altepetl, Tepeticpac, Ocotelulco, Tizatlán and Quiahuiztlán, governed by a council of lords rather than a single ruler with a god behind him. Archaeologists have spent the last two decades arguing that this was a genuinely collective state, unusual in Mesoamerica, and that it lasted because of that structure rather than in spite of it. What it lasted through was encirclement. The Triple Alliance had surrounded Tlaxcallan, cut it off from salt and cotton, and turned the border into a permanent theater of ritual combat, the flower wars. Two or three generations of that produced a people who defined themselves by not being Mexica. Which is why the year 1519 still gets argued about. The Tlaxcaltecs fought Cortés first, hard, under Xicohtencatl the Younger, and then made a decision that Mexican nationalist history has held against them ever since: they allied with him. Tens of thousands of Tlaxcaltec warriors went on to take Tenochtitlan. From Tlaxcala the transaction looks different, a sovereign state picking its side in a regional war it had been losing for a century, and the terms it got were real. The Crown exempted them from tribute, let their lords ride horses and carry arms, granted the city a coat of arms, and left Tlaxcala governing itself as a corporate republic while the land around it was parceled out to encomenderos. They wrote their own account of the whole thing, the Lienzo de Tlaxcala, in pictures, with themselves in the frame.
The stranger legacy runs north. In 1591 some four hundred Tlaxcaltec families were sent as colonists into the Chichimec frontier, founding San Esteban de Nueva Tlaxcala beside Saltillo and seeding towns across Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas and eventually Texas and New Mexico. Tlaxcaltec surnames and place names are still up there. Back home the state is Mexico's smallest, Catholic in the ordinary Mexican way, with pilgrimages to the Virgin of Ocotlán and pulque still cut from maguey in the fields. Nahuatl survives in pockets on the flanks of the mountain.
