About Smeldingi People
The Smeldingi were a small Slavic people who lived just east of the Elbe in the ninth century, on the raw edge of Charlemagne's empire. Like the rest of the region's Slavs, they were later absorbed into the German-speaking population of what is now eastern Germany. Very little of them survives: a few lines in Frankish annals, their name, and an open argument about where exactly they lived. Most reconstructions put them somewhere between the Elbe and the Havel, and they are usually counted as a branch of the Hevelli, whose center lay on the Havel.
Their name reached us through Frankish scribes, who gave it a Germanic -ingi ending, but the root is Slavic: *smola, meaning resin. The same root shows up in the name of the Smolyani, a South Slavic group in the Balkans, and in the city of Smolensk far to the east, a sign of how widely early Slavic vocabulary had spread. No source says whether the name pointed to pine country, tar-making or something else.
They belonged to the Polabian Slavs, the peoples settled along the Elbe and its tributaries, and that placed them on a hard frontier. Across the river were the Saxons, only recently and forcibly brought under Frankish rule. To the north lived the Obotrites, who were allies of the Franks, and beyond them the Danes. In 808 the Danish king Godfred attacked the Obotrites, and the Smeldingi and their neighbors the Linones went over to his side. The Franks answered quickly. Charlemagne's son Charles bridged the Elbe, led an army across and laid waste to their fields. The next year the Obotrite leader Thrasco, backed by Saxon forces, captured what the annals call the largest stronghold of the Smeldingi. Almost everything known about them comes from those two years.
They would have spoken a West Slavic dialect of the Lechitic branch, related to the later Polabian language and more distantly to Polish. Apart from their name, none of it was written down. Like other Elbe Slavs of the time, they practiced a pre-Christian Slavic religion, but no god, shrine or rite is recorded for them in particular. The German king Henry I took the Hevelli stronghold at Brandenburg around 929. Over the following centuries of war, missionary pressure and German settlement, Slavic speech between the Elbe and the Oder slowly died out. Today their legacy lies mostly in the Slavic place names scattered across the region, and in the reminder that the Elbe once divided languages as well as kingdoms.
