About Shkreli People
The Shkreli are one of the old highland clans, or fise, of Malësia e Madhe in northern Albania. What makes them a group is a shared name and a line of descent more than any single village. Membership passes through the father. For centuries it decided whom a person could not marry, since everyone in the same fis counts as kin. It also decided whose feud a family inherited and which banner its men answered to. The name has spread beyond Albania. Muslim Albanian families in the Rugova gorge of Kosovo still carry it. In Sandžak, the borderland shared by Serbia and Montenegro, descendants who switched to Slavic speech carry it as Skrijelj, and today most of them identify as Bosniaks.
The home district lies north of Shkodër, in hard limestone country that climbs from the lake plain toward the Accursed Mountains. Kastrati and Kelmendi are its neighbors. People there speak Gheg Albanian in the northwestern form shared across the Malësia tribes, while the Sandžak branch speaks Bosnian or Serbian like the towns around it. In Albania the Shkreli are largely Roman Catholic, and the church long existed alongside customary law instead of replacing it. The Kanun is an unwritten code built on hospitality, the sworn word called besa and the duties of blood feud. It governed land, marriage and vengeance well into the twentieth century. The Rugova and Sandžak branches are Muslim, so one clan name now covers a church, a mosque and two languages.
Under Ottoman rule the Shkreli formed their own bajrak, a unit led by a hereditary flag-bearer, and like their neighbors they kept a good deal of local autonomy. In 1911 they joined the highland tribes that rose against the Ottomans, one of the revolts that came just before Albanian independence the following year. The communist state set out to break clan authority, collectivized farming and in 1967 banned religion outright. After 1991 people left the valleys for Shkodër, Tirana and abroad, above all the United States, where families from Malësia e Madhe built close communities around Detroit and New York. Shkreli is now a familiar surname in that diaspora, and on both sides of the Atlantic, many families still care which fis they come from.
