About Sadz People
The Sadz are the Abkhaz of the far northwestern coast. For generations they governed themselves in small communities along the Black Sea, from around Gagra northwest to the Khosta River, and stayed largely outside the control of the Abkhaz princes to the south. Their own name for themselves is Asadzwa. Russian officers and mapmakers called them Dzhigets. Their land was a strip of beaches and river mouths hemmed in by steep, forested ridges. Today it is split between Abkhazia and the Sochi district of Russia, and almost no Sadz live there.
Sadz is a dialect of Abkhaz, which belongs to the small Northwest Caucasian family. Linguists know the family for its huge number of consonants and very few vowels. The Sadz's neighbors spoke related languages: the Ubykh just up the coast, the Circassians beyond them and Abaza speakers across the mountains to the north. That shift to Turkey is the central fact of Sadz history. In the 1830s Russia built forts on this coast, at Gagra and at Cape Adler, to cut the region off from Ottoman traders. Even so, the Sadz and their kin in the highlands kept their independence for decades. When the Caucasian War ended in 1864, nearly all of them were driven out. They were shipped across the Black Sea to the Ottoman Empire along with the Ubykh and much of Circassia.
