About Romanisael People
The Romanisael are the old Romani families of Norway and Sweden. In Norway they are known as tatere or reisende, and in Sweden as resande. The last two words simply mean travelers. They have no territory of their own. What makes them a people is their descent and a language they have kept among themselves for five centuries, inside two countries that spent much of that time trying to make them disappear. They are Scandinavian by birth and citizenship and Romani by ancestry and memory, and they are both at once.
Their ancestors were part of the Romani migration into northern Europe, and records show a Romani group arriving in Stockholm in 1512. Over the following centuries, families made their living from trades they could take with them: horse dealing, tinsmithing, peddling, mending household goods and seasonal farm work. In Norway some families traveled the coast by boat. Farm households bought what they made and sold, but still kept them at arm's length.
Their language, Scandoromani, is a para-Romani language. That means it uses Romani words, which are Indo-Aryan in origin, on top of Norwegian or Swedish grammar. It worked as a private code. A sentence could sound almost like ordinary Norwegian or Swedish to someone at the next table and still tell that person nothing. Today the language is endangered, kept alive mostly by older speakers and within families. Like their neighbors, they come from a Lutheran background. That made it all the more bitter that Norway's harshest campaign against them was run by a Christian mission.
A policy of erasure
Starting in 1897, the organization later called the Norwegian Mission Among the Homeless worked to end the traveling life. It was privately run but paid for by the state. It took children from their families and put them in orphanages and foster homes. It sent families to a labor colony at Svanviken, which did not close until 1989, and it took part in sterilizations under the 1934 law. Sweden did much the same. In the 1940s it surveyed the resande as a supposed racial problem, and its sterilization program hit them hard. Both countries have since looked back at this history in official reports. Norway's government has apologized, and both countries now recognize the group as a national minority.
Today most Romanisael live settled lives in towns and cities and work ordinary jobs, though some families still go on the road with caravans in summer. The Glomdal Museum in Elverum has a permanent exhibition on their history. Its title is Romani: Latjo Drom, the good road.
