About Rama People

The Rama are an Indigenous people of the South Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua — approximately 2,000 self-identified per the 2005 INIDE census, concentrated on Rama Cay (an island in Bluefields Bay) and adjacent coastal communities of Tiktik Kaanu, Sumu Kaat, Wiring Cay, and Bangkukuk. The Rama language is part of the Chibchan family (related to Cabécar and Bribri of Costa Rica) and is critically endangered with very few first-language speakers remaining. The community has maintained distinct identity despite long demographic and political marginalization.
