About Poqomam People
The Poqomam are not one place but a handful of towns that held on, and the gaps between them are the story. Chinautla and Mixco sit on the edge of Guatemala City, close enough that the capital has swallowed most of Mixco whole. Palín lies farther south, on the road that drops toward the Pacific. San Luis Jilotepeque and San Carlos Alzatate are off east in Jalapa, dry country, a long way from the rest. Poqomam territory once ran continuously with that of the Poqomchi', their nearest relatives, until K'iche' and Q'eqchi' expansion split the two apart well before the Spanish showed up. Poqomchi' ended up in the Verapaces, Poqomam south and east of it, with a hundred miles of other people's country in between. Both belong to the Poqom branch of Eastern Mayan, and a Poqomam speaker hears more of home in Poqomchi' than in the Kaqchikel spoken next door.
Alvarado took the fortified Poqomam capital in 1525, after a siege that the colonial accounts made much of. The hilltop ruin long sold to visitors as Mixco Viejo has since been reassigned to the Kaqchikel Chajoma, with the Poqomam stronghold now generally placed at Chinautla Viejo: the kind of correction that takes decades to reach the road signs. What followed was resettlement into colonial towns, then four centuries of living directly against ladino neighbors. San Luis Jilotepeque became, in the 1940s, one of the most closely studied cases anywhere of how that arrangement actually worked day to day. Catholicism here runs through the cofradías, the lay brotherhoods that keep the saints, pay for their feasts and hand the obligation down, though evangelical churches have taken a large share of the towns since the 1980s. Chinautla is known across Guatemala for its pottery: hand built without a wheel, burnished to a shine, made by women and taught daughter to daughter, and now squeezed hard by what the capital's runoff has done to the river and the clay banks. In Palín the market still gathers under an enormous old ceiba in the plaza. The language is the pressure point. It is holding in Palín and out in Jalapa, effectively gone in Mixco, and every Poqomam town has schoolchildren who understand their grandmothers without answering in kind.
