About Nutabe People
The Nutabe are known almost entirely through the people who conquered them. They held the broken mountain country of northern Antioquia, in Colombia, between the Cauca River and the Porce River. The ground between those rivers is not gentle. On one side it drops into the hot, deep canyon of the Cauca, and in the middle it rises to cool uplands, so a short walk crosses several climates. Like their neighbors, the Nutabe lived under local chiefs, the caciques of the Spanish accounts. They grew maize on the slopes of a country where gold turns up in the rivers and hillsides. That gold decided their fate. Northern Antioquia became one of the great gold districts of colonial New Granada, and the conquest that reached it in the sixteenth century was built around mining.
What followed was the familiar collapse: war, epidemic disease and forced labor. Indigenous numbers across the region fell steeply, and enslaved Africans were brought in to work the mines. Survivors were absorbed into the mixed rural population that became Antioquian society. Genetic studies of that population find strong Indigenous ancestry on the maternal side. It is the trace of Native women and families that the colonial order absorbed but never recorded.
Their language is gone. What survives is fragmentary, too thin to place in a language family with any confidence. Some scholars link it with Old Catío, the extinct speech of western Antioquia, which is a different language from the living Emberá Catío. Their religious life is even harder to recover. The Spanish who wrote about the Nutabe cared about tribute, labor and gold, and they left almost nothing on what the Nutabe themselves believed. What remains is a mountain people seen at the moment of contact, known mostly through their neighbors, their river boundaries and the metal that brought outsiders in.
