About Moriori People
The Moriori are the indigenous Polynesian people of the Chatham Islands (Rekohu), an isolated, cool, windswept archipelago east of the New Zealand mainland. Living within a small and enclosed environment, they are especially remembered for Nunuku's law, a covenant of peace attributed to the ancestral figure Nunuku-whenua that renounced warfare and killing and required disputes to be settled without lethal violence. This ethic of non violence shaped their society for generations before outside contact, and left them tragically vulnerable to invasion and enslavement in the nineteenth century, from which the population and culture were nearly destroyed but have since been actively revived by their descendants.
