About Moken People
The Moken are the people of the Andaman Sea who, for most of the year, do not live on land. From Myanmar's Mergui Archipelago south to the Surin Islands of Thailand, families still move between islands in the kabang, a boat hollowed from a single log, built up with plank sides and roofed with pandanus thatch. Through the dry months a household lives aboard: cooking, sleeping, giving birth, diving for sea cucumbers and shellfish, spearing fish, and trading the catch for rice with Burmese, Thai and Chinese middlemen. When the southwest monsoon closes the sea they pull ashore and put up stilt huts on a sheltered beach until the wind turns. Outsiders lump them with two related coastal peoples, the Moklen and the Urak Lawoi, under the Thai label chao le, sea people, or the older English phrase sea gypsies. The Moken are the most mobile of the three and the ones who kept the boats longest.
They number only a few thousand, most of them on the Myanmar side. The language is Austronesian, a distant cousin of Malay that went its own way long ago and carries loanwords from Burmese, Mon and Thai. Religion is animist and practical: ancestor spirits, sea spirits, and a spirit medium who leads the annual festival where carved spirit poles, lobong, are raised on the beach and the living sing, drink and settle accounts with the dead. The kabang is treated as a body, with a notch at the bow for its mouth and a notch at the stern for its anus, and origin stories tie the people's wandering to the curse of a mythical queen. Two things made the Moken briefly famous. In 2003 a Swedish researcher showed that Moken children see clearly underwater by constricting their pupils and reshaping their lenses, something European children could be trained to do but did not do on their own. Then in December 2004 the Moken villages on the Surin Islands emptied before the tsunami hit, because elders read the retreating sea through old stories of laboon, the wave that swallows people, and drove everyone uphill. Almost no one died. The pressures since have been slower and harder to outrun: Thai marine park rules against felling the hardwoods a kabang needs, Myanmar military limits on movement, statelessness on both sides of the border, tourism, cheap alcohol, and a drift into settled villages where the boats rot on the beach. Many young Moken have never built one.
