About Matlatzinca People
The Matlatzinca are named for something they did rather than something they are. Matlatl is Nahuatl for net, and the Mexica called the people of the Toluca Valley the net people, most likely for the carrying nets they filled with maize. It was never their own word. In Michoacán they were known as Pirinda, and the speakers at Oxtotilpan call their language Bot'una. Neither has anything to do with nets, and the distance between the name that stuck and the names they use for themselves is a fair place to start with a people who have spent five centuries being described by their neighbors.
Their country is the Valley of Toluca, a cold high basin west of Mexico City, more than 8,000 feet up and closed in by volcanoes, with the extinct cone of the Nevado de Toluca standing over its southwestern edge. Before the Aztecs came this was Matlatzinco, governed from Calixtlahuaca, where a round temple to the wind god still stands. Axayácatl's campaigns in the 1470s ended that. The valley was absorbed, garrisons were installed, and part of the population moved west into Michoacán, where the Purépecha state took them on as frontier troops and settled them around Charo. Their descendants there were still identified as Pirinda generations into the colonial period.

Matlatzinca is spoken in one town, San Francisco Oxtotilpan in the municipality of Temascaltepec, on the skirts of the Nevado, and its nearest relative, Tlahuica or Ocuilteco, holds on at San Juan Atzingo. Both belong to the Oto-Pamean branch of Oto-Manguean, cousins to the Otomi and Mazahua who surround them on every side, and both are counted among Mexico's most endangered languages. Catholicism arrived early and went in deep, run at the village level through mayordomías, the rotating sponsorship of a saint's fiesta that can cost a household a year of savings and buys it standing for life. The mountain kept its own claim as well: the crater lakes on the Nevado received offerings long before the friars, and have not entirely stopped.
