About Kreevins People
The Kreevins were Votes, a Finnic people from Ingria on the Gulf of Finland, who lived as a small enclave around the town of Bauska in southern Latvia from the 15th century until the mid-19th, when they merged into the Latvian population around them. Their descendants are Latvians now. The name shows how their neighbors saw them: krieviņi is a Latvian diminutive meaning "little Russians," and the label had less to do with ancestry than with sound. They spoke a dialect of Votic, a close relative of Estonian and Finnish. To farmers who spoke Latvian, a Baltic language from a completely different family, it sounded as foreign as Russian. Their arrival is usually told as a war story. When the Livonian Order fought Novgorod in the 1440s, it took Votian captives out of Ingria and resettled them near Bauska, where the Order was building a castle where the Mūsa and Mēmele rivers meet. The traditional account says the prisoners were put to work on the fortress. Whatever the details, a Finnic-speaking pocket took root hundreds of kilometers from home, with Latvian speakers on every side.
What stands out is how long it lasted. Under the Order, then the Duchy of Courland and finally the Russian Empire, the Kreevins kept their dialect going for roughly four hundred years in a Latvian countryside. By the time scholars came looking, it was nearly gone. The Finnish linguist Anders Johan Sjögren visited in 1846 and recorded what he could of the dialect. Ferdinand Johann Wiedemann later turned that material into a published study. Those notes are the main reason we can say the Kreevins were Votes, and not just a half-remembered foreign village. Some parts of Votic tradition are said to have outlived the language in the Bauska area. Today the Kreevins are a small but telling chapter in the history of the Votes, whose language barely survives even in Ingria. They are also a reminder that the Latvian countryside was never as uniform as it later looked.
