About Kichwa People

The Kichwa are the largest Indigenous people of Ecuador, descended from Inca-era and pre-Inca highland populations plus lowland Amazonian Kichwa-speaking groups. Highland Kichwa sub-pueblos include Otavaleño (Imbabura, internationally known for textile traditions), Saraguro (Loja), Salasaca (Tungurahua), Cañari (Cañar), Puruhá (Chimborazo), and Caranqui. Lowland Amazonian Kichwa communities are concentrated in Napo, Pastaza, Sucumbíos, and Orellana provinces. The Kichwa language is the Ecuadorian variant of Quechua and is the most-spoken Indigenous language in Ecuador.
