About Khmer Krom People
The name tells you where they stand. Krom means "lower" in Khmer, and Kampuchea Krom, lower Cambodia, is what Khmer speakers call the Mekong Delta, the flat, canal-cut south of present-day Vietnam. The Khmer Krom are the Khmer who stayed on that land while the border moved over them. The delta was Khmer country long before it was Vietnamese. Today they are Vietnamese citizens, about 1.3 million in the 2019 census, who speak Khmer at home and Vietnamese in town. The two languages are distant cousins in the Austroasiatic family, but speakers of one can't understand the other, and Vietnamese is tonal while Khmer is not.
