Nerchinsk, founded in the 1650s, became a base for the Russian advance and gave its name to the 1689 treaty that set the first border with Qing China. In the nineteenth century the Transbaikal Cossack Host enrolled Russians, Buryats and Evenks side by side to guard that frontier, which deepened the mixing already under way in villages and garrisons.
