The Jah Hut are a small Orang Asli people of Peninsular Malaysia. Jah Hut belongs to the Aslian branch of the Austroasiatic family. That makes it a distant cousin of Khmer and Vietnamese, not of the Malay spoken in nearby towns, and it is unusual enough that linguists often place it in a branch of its own within Aslian. The Malaysian government counts the Jah Hut among the Senoi, one of three official Orang Asli divisions, along with the Semai, Temiar, Semaq Beri, Che Wong and Mah Meri.
For generations Jah Hut households farmed shifting plots of hill rice and cassava. They also hunted, fished and gathered forest goods such as rattan to trade downstream. The twentieth century shrank that world. Logging, land development schemes and the spread of rubber and oil palm pushed most families into smallholding and wage work, and today a Jah Hut villager is as likely to tap rubber as to head into the forest. Each village is led by a headman, the batin. Like other Orang Asli, the Jah Hut face a long-running problem: the state does not fully recognize their claims to customary land.
In traditional belief, people share the world with many spirits, and a good number of them can cause illness. This belief produced the practice outsiders know the Jah Hut for best. To treat a sickness, a healer would work out which spirit was to blame and have a wooden figure of it carved. Called a bes, the figure was meant to draw the illness out of the patient so it could be sent away. These carvings were tools made for a single cure and then left behind, not kept as heirlooms. After outside researchers recorded the tradition, carving also became a craft made for sale, and Jah Hut figures are now held in museum collections.
Religious life today is mixed. Older spirit practice continues, and some Jah Hut have converted to Islam or Christianity. Nearly everyone also speaks Malay, so keeping the mother tongue in everyday use is a real question for a language with so few speakers.
