About Haitian Mulatto People
Haitian Mulattos (mulâtres in Haitian usage) comprise approximately 4-5% of the Haitian population, the historically distinct mixed-ancestry community descended from colonial-era French-African admixture and the post-revolution mixed-ancestry political-economic elite. The historical pre-revolution mulatto population (gens de couleur libres, free people of color) numbered approximately 28,000 by 1789 and held substantial economic power despite legal-political subordination to the white colonial elite. Post-revolution, the mulatto elite (under leaders such as Alexandre Pétion and Jean-Pierre Boyer) controlled much of the political and economic life of independent Haiti for substantial periods, contributing to the longstanding mulatto/Black political-class divide that has structured Haitian politics into the 21st century. Concentrated in Port-au-Prince (especially Pétion-Ville), Cap-Haïtien, Jérémie (the historic mulatto stronghold), and other urban centers. The community maintains distinct French-speaking traditions (in addition to Haitian Creole) and historical association with elite professions (medicine, law, commerce, government).

Eye color is predominantly brown, with light-eye variants at higher frequency than in the broader Afro-Haitian population. Build varies. The mulâtre / Afro-Haitian boundary in modern Haiti is socially fluid in younger generations through continued admixture, but the historical political-class significance of the distinction has been substantial.
