About Greek Cypriot People

Greek Cypriots comprise approximately 77% of the Cyprus population per the 2021 Census — about 870,000+, the dominant ethnic-linguistic identification in the Republic of Cyprus. Predominantly Greek Orthodox Christian (the Cypriot Orthodox Church / Church of Cyprus has been autocephalous since the Council of Ephesus 431 CE). Greek-Cypriot identity traces continuously to the broader Greek-language-and-cultural community of the eastern Mediterranean — Cyprus has been a Greek-cultural-zone island since the post-Mycenaean Greek colonization (~1100 BCE) plus continuing Greek-language continuity through Roman, Byzantine, Frankish/Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman, and British colonial periods. The Greek-Cypriot dialect is distinct from Standard Greek with substantial archaic features. Predominantly concentrated in the Republic of Cyprus-controlled territory (the southern two-thirds of the island).
